I recently was driving my car and noticed a crack on my windshield. I have no idea how it even got there. For all I know, it could have been there for a week by the time I even noticed it. It seems like a fairly decent sixed crack and it is near the edge of the auto glass. I have read on line that if you have a crack in your windshield that you will most likely need to get the entire windshield replaced rather than just repaired. I was wondering what your professionals take on this is? Do you think I will need to completely replace my windshield or there is still a chance that I can just get a repair? Either way, I know that it needs to get done soon. I just want to make sure that I am making the right decision. There is no need for me to spend more money than I have to.

Dear Cracked Windshield,

This happens to a lot of people. Many people come into our establishment all the time saying that they just noticed a crack on their auto glass and have no idea how it got there. Do not worry about the timing. We understand that some things do go unnoticed when it comes to your vehicle. Since you have noticed it though, we do recommend that you get it fixed as soon as you can. Now let us go over whether you need an entirely new windshield or if you just need a simple repair.

When it comes to a crack on your windshield, it is always hard to tell without looking at it if you will need just a repair or a replacement. You should look at where the crack is and how large it is. If it is making your windshield uneven then it will need to be replaced. If the crack is larger than fifteen centimeters or is in the line of sight, it will also most likely need to be replaced. If you do not think any of these things are true for your vehicle, then you will probably be okay with just a repair.

You should keep in mind one thing. Your vehicles windshield will never be as strong as it was originally. If you were to get a replacement, your windshield will be just slightly weaker than it was when you first purchased the vehicle. The sealant will not hold as well. Our professionals always recommend that if you are able to just repair it then do it. Only replace your auto glass if you absolutely have to.

We hope this information has helped you. Yes, there are many reasons why you might need to have your auto glass replaced, but if you are able to have it repaired then please do so.
